Theyyam: The dance of God

Theyyam festival is a popular ritual, form of worship in north Kerala especially in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Each year between November to March, theyyam festival takes place at various community temples. There are around 400 types of theyyam performances with different types of mythological deities and stories. Each theyyam has something unique about it.

Theyyam festival basically is a dance performance based on mythological stories; the vibrant makeup, colourful dresses depicting mythological divine characters, entrancing music on drums is the main attraction of Theyyam festival. With full makeup, clothing and ornaments the performer transforms himself into a Theyyam – the avatar of God. Within this state of trance, the Theyyam perform various dance forms and acts to demonstrate its power and strength. Some Theyyams perform their act with fire. It is indeed an enthralled experience to witness such a theyyam festival. It is said that Theyyam has God like powers to bless their devotees and free them from all their sorrows and curses.

While locals gather for theyyam festival as part of annual community program and take blessings, it is also considered to be an ancient dance and art form of Kerala. This festival is becoming an attraction for photographers and tourist as well. Normally all the theyyam performances begin during the late evening, while this is very challenging for photographers at the same time it gives the opportunity to capture different moods and drama of event. One need to be conversant with camera basics to capture the moments in low or at times no light situations, and also one need to know the events that going to unfold in front of them to be ready for that exact moment.
